Dedicated career support for F-1 and international students in MCS, MDS, and MSWE

We Are Here to Help

Building a career in the U.S. as an international student comes with a unique set of challenges — visa timelines, work authorization requirements, cultural nuances in networking and interviewing, and a job search landscape that can feel unfamiliar and high-stakes all at once. We know. And we are here for all of it.

Our Career Development Team works directly with F-1 and international students across MCS, MSWE, and MDS. From resume reviews and mock interviews to CPT support and job search strategy, we are in your corner at every step. For all visa and immigration-related questions, the UC Irvine International Center is your primary resource — but when it comes to building a career in the U.S., or anywhere in the world, we are the team that will prepare you for it.

Work Authorization Support

Understanding CPT and OPT is part of the journey, and you do not have to figure it out alone

During Your Program

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows eligible F-1 students to gain work experience — including internships — that is directly tied to their academic program. If you are pursuing an internship and need CPT authorization, our Career Development Team is here to guide you through the process and help ensure everything is in order.

The Career Development Team assists with CPT-related guidance as part of your internship and job search preparation. The UC Irvine International Center issues your official CPT authorization.

Before Graduation

Optional Practical Training (OPT) gives F-1 graduates the opportunity to work in the U.S. in a role related to their field of study. After graduation, you are eligible for 12 months of standard OPT. And because MCS, MSWE, and MDS are all STEM-designated programs, you are also eligible for a 24-month STEM OPT extension — giving you up to 36 months total to gain U.S. work experience before needing employer sponsorship. Planning ahead is critical, as the application timeline has strict deadlines.

Your Graduate Program Counselor provides guidance on OPT as part of your academic and post-graduation planning. The UC Irvine International Center manages all official OPT applications and STEM extension requests.
